Access by Design Consulting Services
Access by Design is a woman owned business providing
a
full range of Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility compliance consulting services to
public entities and to the private sector.
-
- ADA Accessibility Compliance
Audits
are frequently necessary to determine compliance with the
accessibility requirements of the "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990"
(ADA). The ADA requires goods and services offered by public
accommodations, programs and services provided by state and local
government entities, and all new commercial construction as well
as alterations and the "path of travel" serving them, be
readily accessible to and usable by individuals who have disabilities.
Without a survey to identify potential obstacles, it is nearly
impossible to comply with these mandates.
-
- Barrier Removal Projects
require a pragmatic approach to integrating the
letter of the law with the spirit of the law when eliminating barriers in the
built environment. Access by Design offers this
perspective as well as
drawings, specifications, and project management to assure that
implementation complies with the ADA Accessibility Guidelines
(ADAAG)/Standards for Accessible Design.
-
- Training of key personnel is advisable.
Having a thorough understanding
of the law is imperative, not only for planning and implementing design
projects, but in evaluating product claims. The Access by
Design
workshop addresses specific staff training objectives to meet the client's
particular needs.
-
- Plan Check of drawings for planned
alterations or new construction will
assure compliance with ADA Accessibility Guidelines. The ADAAG has
not yet been adopted by most building codes, and local building officials
are not responsible for enforcing the ADA. A separate review eliminates
the guesswork surrounding the Federal disability access requirements.
-
- Signage Programs when well designed,
address not only the needs of
people with disabilities, but make wayfinding easier for anyone using the
site or building. Installing effective signage is often considered to be a
relatively simple and inexpensive way to address some of the access
requirements for existing facilities.
-
- Additional services available:
- Access and travel guide development.
- Facility Master Planning, Interior Design, and Project
Management.
- The Accessibility Design Library, an ADAAG program for
AutoCAD.
- Web page development
