Barrier Removal

Frequently the only way to achieve access in an existing facility is to remove barriers in the built environment. Barrier removal projects should always comply with the standards of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), unless technically infeasible.

Most barriers can be removed through simple maintenance or replacement procedures; such as lowering towel dispensers or replacing door knobs. These projects should be completed immediately. Access by Design provides specifications and installation criteria which adhere to the ADAAG standards. We provide actual figures from the ADAAG, as well as written criteria for mounting heights, space tolerances, etc. This type of work can be accomplished by vendors, in-house staff, or contractors.

Occasionally, barrier removal projects require more extensive modifications. Complete design services address remodels which meet ADA access requirements. Existing conditions are determined, using the ADA Accessibility Compliance Audit or through a field survey.

Space studies graphically illustrating design concepts are developed. We look at various design options to determine which best suit the existing architecture, space constraints, and budget considerations. With approval of preliminary design, construction drawings and materials specifications commence. All necessary working drawings are prepared.

Working drawings and specifications are presented for client approvals. Drawings are generally completed on AutoCAD and show floor plans and elevations, as well as the actual ADAAG figures. Construction notes outline the exact ADA requirements. Upon client approval, drawings and specifications are finalized. A definitive scope of work and the construction documents are issued for bids, contractors selected, and implementation scheduled.

Project management assures that the work of contractors and vendors is coordinated and supervised to maintain the established project schedule and budget. Regular on-site field inspections assure adherence to drawings and specifications. Periodic written status reports covering key elements may be distributed to designated representatives. Upon project completion, a final walk-through is conducted for client approval and acceptance.
