Providing Access Solutions

We developed, sponsor, and maintain this web site
as a public service to our visitors.
We have made every effort to simplify the ADA
and make it easier for everyone to understand.

It is supported solely with private funds.

Access by Design is a woman-owned facility management consulting firm based in Colorado. Established in May, 1990, as jbfm, the name was changed in 1993 to better reflect the company's specialization: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility compliance.

The firm is a sole proprietorship which utilizes outscored services providers for routine business operations tasks. On large projects, specialists in access issues and computer-aided architectural drafting are brought into the Access by Design team. This business approach minimizes overheads while maximizing professional expertise.

Clients range from cities, counties, states and school districts to small businesses such as restaurants and medical offices and to large corporations, including a number of Fortune 500 companies. We have completed over 2000 access audits, hundreds of barrier removal projects, and several major ADA facility master planning projects. Additionally, we have researched and published an access guide to the State of Wyoming and have designed several municipal signage/wayfinding programs.

We utilize current office technology, including computer hardware and software, laser and color printers, scanners, digitizing tablets, plotters, and electronic mail. Recognizing the implications of current electronic communication technology, Access by Design developed and hosts this Web site to provide information and resources for ADA implementation and facility planning and design.

As a Regional Affiliate for Universal Access 2000, an ADA implementation project of the Rocky Mountain ADA Technical Assistance Center, we organize and coordinate ADA activities in Colorado communities.

Involvement with business, professional and disability organizations affords us numerous resources and individual experts who are often consulted for input on specific access issues. The affiliation with the ADA Technical Assistance Center and access to on-line ADA resources assures that we have timely information about ADA proposed changes, rulings and activities.

Jean Batchelder, Access by Design owner and president, is a Certified Facility Manager (CFM), the designation awarded by the International Facility Management Association to facility management professionals who have demonstrated expertise in the field. Prior to owning Access by Design, Batchelder's professional experience includes over eight years in facility management and three years of interior architecture and design. She also has a background in business administration and management. This diversified career history serves Access by Design clients well.

This firm has a reputation for being forthright and honest in its dealings, has never missed a deadline, and guarantees the quality of its work. Access by Design stands by its clients 100%. Continued repeat and referral business attests to our clients' satisfaction.
